Entry #2 - The Tone Within the Portrait
Hey everyone,
In this next blog post I'd like to talk about music, specifically the afrobeats genre. Afrobeats is a vibrant, modern music genre originating from West Africa, primarily Nigeria and Ghana, blending traditional rhythms with pop, dancehall, highlife, and hip-hop. It is characterized by infectious, high-energy percussion and deep bass lines, often highlighting themes of partying, love, and success. Out of all the music genres in the world, afrobeats has got to be a favorite genre because of its addictive beats and thoughtful lyrics.
Modern pop, R&B, and hip-hop are known to have been heavily influenced by contemporary afrobeats. Afrobeats is the sound of joy, pride, and movement. It didn't come from industry formulas or market trends. It came from the streets, from Lagos, from Accra, and from black creativity in motion. Artists singing in English, Pidgin, and Yoruba built a sound that reflected urban African youth culture: bold, modern, and rooted, creating music that was local in identity but global in appeal. Songs by Drake and collabs by artists such as Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran, and Selena Gomez with afrobeats artists reflect the global impact afrobeats has had on music today.
I've only recently started listening to afrobeats music after my sister put me on it again, which I'm glad she did. Not only do I love it because it's part of my culture, but also because despite some songs having the same beat, all the songs I've heard are always so unique. Some of my favorite artists include Ayra Starr, WizTheMc, Tyla, Libianca, Rema, and Burna Boy. They're my favorite because they all kind of have the same addictive vibe in their music.

One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite artists, WizTheMc, is called "Show me Love." This song is a smooth R&B, pop, and amapiano track where Wiz expresses deep, tender affection for a romantic partner, describing it as a "perfect daydream". It's my favorite song because it just feels like a classic summer song, and it makes me so happy every time I hear it. Afrobeats has changed me and will continue to change how music is made today.
Enhance your vibe people!
Rosemary--Your blog is looking really good so far. Engaging layout and format. Clear voice and authentic tone. Personable and thoughtful. Interesting topics and content. Good work! Keep doing all of this!
ReplyDeleteAfrobeats didn’t come from industry trends but from real places like Lagos and Accra, because that’s probably why it feels more authentic than a lot of mainstream music. Also, I agree with what you said about songs having similar beats but still sounding different. Artists like Burna Boy and Rema both use that same vibe, but they sound completely different. That’s what makes the genre stand out.
